What is the OPN Method

The OPN Method is a communication program that promotes trust, freedom of expression and understanding through the use of a cyclical structured format. What sets the OPN Method apart from other communication methods is the OPN Method guides the clinician as to how to engage the patient throughout the process from evaluation to discharge. This format is not a checklist or simple guidelines to follow. The OPN Method explains what questions to ask and the order in which to ask the questions. The OPN Method’s simplicity is its driving force. It can work in nearly any healthcare setting for patients (and families) with any diagnosis.

Tell me more about the Professional
Communication Series!

The OPN Method is split into a series of workshops, all detailing how to actively involve a patient in treatment planning using the OPN Method. There are two shorter, more concise workshops (lasting between 2-4 hours) that describe the OPN Method and the evidenced-based research that supports it, and there are three full-day workshops that explore all aspects of patient-centered communication and treatment planning. Each full-day workshop builds on the knowledge from the previous one. Also available for local schools and businesses is a six-week workshop that divides the OPN Method into weekly two-hour classes.

All of these workshops expect your active participation in group discussion, group experiential learning, critical analysis of clinician-patient video-taped interviews, and group role play.
